According to archaeological investigations and historical data, it was found that Telenesti was inhabited since ancient times - Dacians. Dmitrie Cantemir showed in his works the existence of a gothic town on this territory. 

 

There are many legends passed down from ancestors with reference to the town name. One of them says that Telenesti name comes from a very wealthy gentleman named Telea, who lived during the reign of Stefan cel Mare (Stephen the Great). As some sources are talking about one place that was called Fair Telenesti, where many fairs were organized several times a year. During the years the village and Fair Telenesti significantly developed in both directions demographic as well as territorial. 

 

The first time about Telenesti endorsed a historic document in the year 1611.

 

The date of foundation of  Telenesti district, according to data is 1966. Telenesti district has 54 locations including: 1 town, 30 communes and 23 villages, with a population of 70,022 inhabitants and a density of 78.50 inhabitants per km ².
